Ursuline Sister Lucy Kurian, who was on a home visit to Kerala, died Sept. 29 after she slipped and fell into a well.

Sister Kurian, 58, is a member of the Ursulines of Mary immaculate community working in Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh. She belongs to Vengathanam Kandathil family in Palai diocese.

She was scheduled to return to her mission on Oct.5. On Sept. 29 family members began a search after they could not locate the nun to have lunch with her.

They found her in a water-well in the family farm near an under-construction house of her brother’s son. The 20-feet well did not have any protective ring around it.

Fire force from Palai helped the nun out of the well and rushed her to a nearby hospital, but could not save her life.

Convent officials reportedly said the body would be moved to regional Ursuline center in Kannur, northern Kerala. Burial would be on Oct.1 in Kannur convent of the congregation.
