Kolkata Jesuits go green
The action plan they have decided would be implemented in four levels such as individual, community, institutional and province.
Jesuits of Kolkata province will walk more, use less electricity and water and start bio-diversity gardens as part of an action plan they have chalked out to save ecology, an official says.
The Province Assembly that concluded in December had “special focus on ecology,” Provincial Father George Pattery said in a circular to Jesuits.
The province has constituted an Eco-Commission appointing a team of Jesuits to animate the province on many ecological concerns and plans.
“Ecology should receive urgent attention from each of us both at the level of our personal spirituality and also at the level of our corporate mission,” the priest said.
The action plan they have decided would be implemented in four levels such as individual, community, institutional and province.
Individuals are asked to daily examine how they behaved with nature. They are also advised to advocate ecological concerns through meetings, seminars and liturgy. They would also make a personal decision to care for plants and trees without leaving the job to the house ministers.
Jesuit communities would create a biodiversity garden and plant more trees, install solar panels and reduce the use of electricity and water wherever possible.
They would also cut down the use of plastic bags, bottles and polythene and prefer public transport to private vehicles for travel.
At institutional level they would avoid plastic plates and cups during celebrations, gather and sell plastic waste, conserve water and electricity as much as possible, introduce solar energy,
They would also reduce electronic waste and promote green movements and nature and ecology clubs in their educational institutions.
The province would train personnel in environmental studies, and help communities install solar panels. It will also establish eco-friendly ashrams and make gatherings eco-friendly by avoiding plastic plates and cups.
