Religious discuss human sexuality

The group work, reflection, study and writings gave opportunities to consider human sexuality from various angles.

Human sexuality was the topic of discussion when Conference of Religious India’s Western Region jointly organized a seminar with the Indian Society for Promotion of Christian Knowledge (ISPCK).

The March 3-5 seminar in Pune was part of nationwide seminars and workshops ISPCK organizes this year to mark its tercentenary.

The ISPCK, began as the country wing of London-based Society for Promotion of Christian Knowledge, has been in operation since 1710 spreading Christian ideas.

Sister Teresa Joseph of Mary Help of Christians in her keynote address highlighted social functions of human sexuality, sexual orientation, the relation between spirituality and sexuality and relationships.

She said it was the “acceptable time” to intervene with appropriate proposals that would give clear indication to “our young people to value the richness” of being man or woman.

ISPCK representative Sandeep in his inaugural address narrated the purpose of ISPCK organizing seminars to make its tercentenary year in collaboration with other Christian groups.

He said his organization continues an ecumenical character and looks forward to network with like-minded organizations in order to “reach the un-reached.”

Salesian Father Banzelao Julio Teixeira of Goa offered a creative biblical meditation on the subject and challenged the group to read the biblical text of the Samaritan Woman in a new way.

Filomena Shinde spoke on the influence of sexual motivation on human behavior and personal and social problems involving sexuality.

Jose Thayil dealt with the “importance of sexuality in building up personal identity and in the social evolution of individuals.”

Salesain Father Christopher George of Bombay spoke on how to appreciate sexuality. He explained ways to make the best of the creative force of sexuality.

Bishop Thomas Dabre of Poona and Church North India Bishop Vijay B Sathe of Pune attended the valedictory ceremony, where the participants were give certificates.
