Book Review: The Other Side
Redifining Bharat.
The long awaited book to honour Archbishop Vincent M. Concessao on completion of his 50 years of priesthood and his 75th Birthday is finally out of the press. Titled, “The Other Side: Redefining Bharat”, and co-edited by Frs. Dominic Emmanuel, Francis Gonsalves and Mr. John Dayal had its first release on Tuesday 7th February during the CBCI General Body meeting in Bangalore in the presence of all the Cardinals, Archbishops and Bishops.
The book rather than dwelling on the life and achievements of Archbishop Concessao, highlights topics that are not only dear to his heart and espoused by the Catholic Church, they are issues which the Archbishop has rallied for in the public sphere, and for which he has provided outstanding leadership. The essays, written by eminent authors, focus on stark realities of the India which is not as shining as India Inc. and which the rich and powerful would like us to believe. The essays draw roadmaps that India could follow for a brighter tomorrow.
Some of the prominent authors who have contributed to the book are: Mark Tully, Mani Shankar Aiyar, Sitaram Yechury, BG Verghese, Harsh Mander, Navin Chawla, Kancha llaiah, Ambrose Pinto, AK Merchant, Abusaleh Shariff, Ajay Mehta & Neelima Khetan and Sudesh K Verma.
Archbishop Vincent M Concessao was born on 28 September 1936 in Karnataka. Most of his primary and high school education as well as studies for priesthood were in different places in Karnataka. He was ordained a priest in 1961 and since then he has spent major part of his life serving the Archdiocese of Delhi. He did his postgraduate studies at the Loyola University, Chicago. In 1970, he started ‘Chetanalya’, and NGO, to address specifically the problems of resettlement colonies, with out-reach programmes in several slums of Delhi. He became the auxiliary Bishop of Delhi In 1995; Archbishop of Agra in 1998 and has been the Archbishop of Delhi since 2000.
