Medical Mission Sister Rose receives Meghalaya State Award
Dedicated to social and economic uplifting.
In recognition of her outstanding contribution to social services Sister Rose Kayathinkara received the Meghalaya State Award from the governor of Meghalaya Shri S Mooshahary on January 26, 2012 (Republic Day in India).
Citation for the PA Togan Sangma Award, 2012 was given at a special function to honour Sr. Rose.
Born on August 14, 1942, Sr. Rose Kayathinkara is a beacon of hope and a messenger of peace, who has selflessly and relentlessly served the people of Garo Hills for the last thirty-four years.
Her herculean efforts to uplift the people from poverty and destitution through Self-Help Groups (SHGs) promoted and supported by her, have borne fruit in several ways as the people of the region under her care and loving guidance have transformed their lives.
The people have been organized into a cooperative—Mendipathar Multipurpose Cooperative Society (MMCS) Mendipathar, East Garo Hills, and have propelled themselves into an era of self -reliance and prosperity, skill development and entrepreneurship.
Sr. Rose has promoted thrift saving amongst the 155 SHGs promoted by her under the aegis of the Mendipathar Multipurpose Cooperative Society and thus has propagated income-generation activities and micro credit. Her painstaking efforts for introducing social and economic change took flight with the establishment of Mendipathar Multipurpose Cooperative Society.
Through her cooperatives, she has literally liberated the poor farmers and local buyers from the iron clutches of monopolists and moneylenders. The Society runs a margin free shop that is the only supermarket worth its name in the Garo Hills and where commodities are sold at a reasonable price.
Sr. Rose has dedicated her life to the social and economic uplifting and empowerment of the rural masses. She has introduced plantations with all its related advantages to the people of the region radically translating their destitution into prosperity and economic well-being.
She is a pioneer in the field of rubber and coconut plantations and is credited with the status of an unofficial expert par excellence in the related knowledge fields.
She has keenly contributed to improving steadfastly the educational standards of the people and is a renowned torchbearer in the field of adult education.
Through her outstanding achievements Sr. Rose Kayathinkara has earned a place of prestige and honor for the State of Meghalaya.
Therefore, in recognition of her outstanding contribution in Social Services, the Government of Meghalaya is conferring upon her the
“PA TOGAN SANGMA AWARD FOR SOCIAL SERVICE FOR THE YEAR 2012.”
