Sister Fernandes new regional superior
Sister Fernandes, who has served as Mother General for two terms from 1995 to 2007, opted for Northeast as her mission field.
Sister Ventura Fernandes Sister Ventura Fernandes was elected as the new regional superior of Fatima Sisters for the Northeast province.
She replaced Sister Jolly Kottarathil.
Sister Fernandes, who has served as Mother General for two terms from 1995 to 2007, opted for northeast as her mission field.
“During my visits I was taken up by what my sisters were doing. I too wanted to work at the grass-root level,” she said.
The nun, who took charge as regional superior on June 18, said “we came to northeast 25 years ago inspired by Archbishop Thomas Menamparampil, I proposed the mission in the region and the sisters freely opted for it.”
She said their first house in the region, Fatima Convent, was set up at Barama now in Bongaigaon Diocese.
The congregation runs schools and dispensaries besides pastoral work.
It has 50 sisters in 14 communities of the Northeast province working in the six dioceses of Guwahati, Shillong, Agartala, Bongaigaon, Nongstoin and Agra.
The region has 10 local vocations.
Sister Fernandes said “After three years in the northeast, I feel very much at home as I am engrossed in various ministries. We have communities in interior villages. To be a missionary in these places we need to be rooted in God.”
